A (Polish) History of Violence: The Difficulties of Advancing Women’s Rights in the 21st Century

by Adrianna Minta
This April, a fresh controversy related to gender politics took Polish media by storm. Jarosław Gowin, Poland’s current minister of justice and a Civic Platform politician, stated loud and proud that he would vehemently oppose the signing and ratification of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence.

Crossing The Bridge

by Anna-Cara Keim
The Bridge, “Broen” in Danish and “Bron” in Swedish, is a ten part crime series about a Swedish-Danish police investigation of a murder that has just recently been broadcasted by the BBC. The Bridge follows in the footsteps of internationally successful Scandinavian television dramas such as the Danish crime series The Killing, the political drama Borgen, or the long-running and popular Wallander series from Sweden. Perhaps you still remember the photos of Kuopio, a city in the Finnish Lake District, that we published a few months ago when it was freezing cold and the whole place was covered in snow. Now Crossing the Baltic’s Finland correspondent Leena-Mari Laukkanen has returned with gorgeous shots of the first days of summer. The place looks so beautiful that you immediately want to embark on a Finnish summer holiday.

EURO 2012 – Europe is in for a Treat

by Mateusz Zatonski
A few weeks ago we presented you with a rather pessimistic appraisal of the situation in Poland before the European Football Championship which the country is organising together with the neighbouring Ukraine. Many Poles seem to be worried by unfinished road construction projects, poor promotion of the tournament, and not least of all the political scandals in the Ukraine that led some European politicians to declare a boycott of the tournament. In some sections of the Polish society the moods are rather bleak.

Cultural Differences in Foreign Policy: The Concept of Intervention

by Peter Lindén
As the recent case of Syria has shown, the issue of military intervention is again topical in international media. The countries surrounding the Baltic Sea understandably have different views on the idea of military intervention; some states are firm believers and promoters of democracy and liberal values while others emphasize the need to protect the institution of state sovereignty. The relationship these countries have to NATO is another obvious factor in how they approach the issue.

Eyewitness: Euro-reminiscences from Warsaw

If you follow us on Facebook or on Twitter you have been experiencing an onslaught of photographs and updates from the Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine throughout June.
